CTH Certificate in English for Hospitality and Tourism
Assessment
Levels 1 and 2 will each be assessed by final examination on the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Each of the four examination papers within the final examination will have equal weighting and will be marked out of a maximum of 40 marks. Examination content will be hospitality and tourism based. In preparing for the examinations, an effort is made to create a range of contexts relevant to the span of role specialisms and the common interests of the target group for the qualifications.
The following is a description of the examination format for each of the four skills:
Listening
There will be three listening texts and the examination should last no longer than 30 minutes. One text will be a dialogue in a relevant hospitality or tourism-based setting. One will be a monologue and the other will vary. There will be at least one text based on a customer service encounter and another involving communication between professionals. The language will be informal or semi-formal spoken English. The texts will be read to you by the invigilator. The texts will be read three times at level 1 and twice at level 2.
Writing
There will be two compulsory tasks and the time allowed will be 1 hour. One of the tasks will involve processing some information and writing a relevant response to it. The other task will be one of two types:
A discursive question in which you will need to give opinions and ideas and justify them
A narrative style question involving a clear description of a course of events.
Reading
There will be three texts and the time allowed will be 1 hour. You will be assessed on your ability to locate and understand specific content for a relevant purpose and to understand the flow of a passage as well as simple comprehension of facts and vocabulary items.
Speaking
The speaking test will be conducted on a one-to-one basis and should last about 15 minutes. There will be 3 parts. The first part will consist of general questions connected with you in some way. The second part will be a communication activity based on pictures. There will be a selection of pictures to cover a range of role specialisms. Part three will be either:
A role-play between the examiner and you based on information supplied, or
A discussion involving giving an opinion, agreeing, disagreeing etc.
CTH English examinations are held on an on-demand basis.
